There’s been a bandstand in Eastbourne for over 100 years, but the current semi-circular design with two balconies and a stainless steel spire was a revelation when it was first built in the 1930s. Still the only Bandstand of its type in the UK, its eye-catching design and sense of style made it an immediate success; more than 10,000 people attended all three of the opening day’s concerts in July 1935. Hugely popular ever since, this splendid venue hosts a constantly changing programme of musical, theatrical and media events.
Today, the Eastbourne Bandstand is still one of the UK’s liveliest venues, with a packed schedule of concerts running throughout the year. There’s something for every musical taste, from weekly concerts with fireworks, tribute bands and kids’ party nights to the more traditional big bands and the ever-popular brass band and Sunday afternoon concerts. Given its spectacular location and superb period detail, the Bandstand has featured in many films and TV series. A regular venue for the popular Antiques Roadshow, the Bandstand has also starred in programmes such as Foyle’s War, Little Britain and the opening sequence of the BBC South East News.
